R.I.P.

Four Norwegian soldiers were killed in Afghanistan today. One of them was one of my favourite freshmans when I was a senior in High School. Rest in Peace Simen, you will never be forgotten.

My vacation got off to a bit of a rocky start with this message -although that is nothing compared to the pain and hurt and devastation his family and loved ones feel (and the three others). I had to write this, war is a hard thing to decide whether is good or bad... But whatever lives war takes, it always hurts for someone.

All my love and sympathy to the families and friends of our soldiers.

Honestly, and I hope you don't feel this is too harsh since you knew one of the dead soldiers, but I don't think it's hard to decide whether or not this war is a bad thing. It is a bad thing.

1.Norway should not be involved in any aggression on foreign soil. Our military is called "the defence" for a reason.

2. Norway has no cause or reason to be there save for the fact that we disagree with the regime on an intellectual level and we want to stay friends with the US (whose motives I will not try to discern even though I fear they are less than honorable). If Norway were to intervene military every time we disagreed with someone's policies, the entire nation would have to be at war all the time (and we'd still probably have to outsource most of the attacks to foreigners because we're only 4,5million people).

3. Even if we were to try and influence a foreign regime to change its policies, there are far more effective means than war. There is a reason why Norway spends a lot of money on development aid and it is not because it's less effective than trying to convince someone to be more democratic at gunpoint.

I feel bad for the soldiers that died, but they volunteered to be the aggressors in a war we should not have helped start. I feel worse for their families who's lost a loved one. I mostly feel for the people of Afghanistan who have lost so many more than we ever hear about.

I know you have very good reason for what you are saying. I still dont feel that was the point of my post.
I did not say war is right, I did not say I didnt feel bad for the Afghan people or all the other people who are suffering from war.. I simply needed to say rest in peace for one of my old friends that died today

I know that wasn't your main point. And i hope they do rest in peace. And i understand the need to say goodbye. I just needed to say my opinion since you said it's hard to see whether war is right or not. In this case, it isn't.

That doesn't mean you don't Get to be sad for the kids who go to war and die. But you should still read the blog entry. It's interesting reading.

But I did not mean to make you more sad. *hugs*
